Father's Day is observed in the United States every third Sunday in June.  It's observance is a day when we recognize the fathers, grandfathers and father figures who have influence in our lives.  It is celebrated through the giving of cards, gifts, dining out and time spent together.

History

Though the history of Father's Day is unclear, before it was official, there were several events and ceremonies that celebrated fathers.  The first statewide Father's Day was proclaimed in the state of Washington on July 19, 1910.  President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it a nationwide holiday in 1972, though it is not a federal holiday.  This year we celebrate Father's Day on June 19, 2016.

There has also been a lot of controversy over the national holiday, as a retail gimmick to sell more products.
